Roseanna Campbell - Personal Biography

Roseanna Campbell Guruji with group after evening pranayama Roseanna in vrischikasana
The note given to Roseanna giving her permission to teach the series

My story is quite unique. I started doing hatha yoga in the early 1960s. I grew up in Hawaii, surfed every day, ate a strict vegetarian diet and practiced yoga. I moved to Encinitas, California in the early 1970s. I met Manju, the son of K. Pattabhi Jois ("Guruji") in Leucadia, where he was teaching "Astanga Yoga," as it was called originally. Shortly after that, I met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff. They had been to Mysore and had perfected the series from Manju and Guruji.

By 1976, I had perfected the advanced asanas. I wanted to be sure that I had everything correct, so I went to Guruji's home in Lakshmipuram, Mysore. David Williams told me exactly what to take and what to expect since he had been there. I arrived at Guruji's studio, where Guruji's wife, Amma, showed me to my quarters. Guruji came shortly thereafter and welcomed me and told me what his expectations were. I attended class two times a day. Since I was the only one from the US there at the time and did do the advanced postures, he was quite delighted. After the morning class, I would go into town to "find my food." At this time only Guruji taught the class. There was a doctor who sent all of his patients to class everyday. He also attended. Guruji and his family welcomed me, and we became very close. I made the mistake of stepping into "The Kitchen"; this was a big "no." In the evening, we practiced pranayama. At that time, Guruji only taught it to advanced students. I was the only one there at that time, so it was on a one-on-one basis with him. It was amazing. When I left his home in Mysore on April 8, 1976, he gave me a gift and a note saying I was a certified yoga instructor.

I married a man while I was at his home and Guruji's son, Ramesh, performed the traditional Indian wedding, which was not recognized in the US.

I now live in Griffin, Georgia and offer individual yoga training (Ph. 407-624-0214).
