Mary Jo Mulligan - Personal Biography
Mary Jo Mulligan is one of the few India-certified Ashtanga yoga teachers in the United States and currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her authorization to teach Ashtanga yoga in July 2003 by the late Sri Pattabhi Jois and achieved certification by Sharath Rangaswamy in September 2009 after completing her tenth trip to Mysore, India. Her other yoga training includes workshops with several world-recognized teachers from the Ashtanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga traditions (including sutra study and chanting). Mary Jo has also completed the following: Masters of Arts in Eastern Philosophy degree from St. John's College in Santa Fe; Yoga Works Teacher Training Program in Santa Monica, California; Certificate of Instruction in Exercise Science from University of California, San Diego. Mary Jo's teaching philosophy stems from the belief that proper alignment of the asanas, along with the correct ujayi breathing technique, are key to a transformative Ashtanga yoga practice. This method allows for the energy channels of the body to open more completely in order for one to become closer to the state of yoga through time. Mary Jo teaches group classes, private lessons and workshops with detailed instruction towards proper alignment and breath. She is serious and disciplined, yet light-hearted and compassionate in her teaching and practice. More about Mary Jo: About personal biography pages
